Cattleyas

Cattleyas, the royalty of the orchid family, are native to the slopes of the Andes in South America. On the mountain slopes they have moderate days and cool nights, so they appreciate a temperature drop in the evening. They are comfortable at temperatures as low as 55 degrees at night, with days in the 70's or higher. They need bright light (not full sun) to flower. They must have good drainage, and like to dry a bit between waterings. Fertilize lightly when they are in active growth. Repot in a well draining mix, like our Cypress blends, when they have outgrown the pot or the mix has broken down (every two or three years).

Please refer to individual items for time expected until first blooming. Many of our offerings are young plants that will need to be grown to flowering size.  Unless otherwise stated in the description, items listed are not sent in spike, bud or bloom.

    Repotting time is here!  This special includes items that will be on upcoming potting lists here at the greenhouses but in the meantime we have decided to share the wealth!  

    While supplies, last our growers will send one each of the following Cattleya Alliance species bare-rooted from Community Trays and ready for repotting the first time.  All of these are warm growers suitable for standard Cattleya conditions.  

    10311 Epidendrum nocturnum- Miniature night-fragrant selection that also does well mounted or in baskets

    10198 Cattleya harrisoniae 'Homestead' x Cattleya harrisoniae- Rich heliotrope pink blooms in the height of summer.  

     

    10176 Laelia purpurata coerulea 'Sweet Twilight' x Laelia purpurata werkhauseri 'Blue Sky'- Blue forms combined to make a new grex.  Lovely and fragrant.

    10181 Encyclia granitica “Mendenhall’ x self- Rare find with apple green blooms that carry a sweet candy-like scent.

     

    This special is only available to customers who are in locations where weather allows for immediate shipment.  Bare-Root collections can not be held for later shipment due to cold weather.
