Cattleyas

Cattleyas, the royalty of the orchid family, are native to the slopes of the Andes in South America. On the mountain slopes they have moderate days and cool nights, so they appreciate a temperature drop in the evening. They are comfortable at temperatures as low as 55 degrees at night, with days in the 70's or higher. They need bright light (not full sun) to flower. They must have good drainage, and like to dry a bit between waterings. Fertilize lightly when they are in active growth. Repot in a well draining mix, like our Cypress blends, when they have outgrown the pot or the mix has broken down (every two or three years).

Please refer to individual items for time expected until first blooming. Many of our offerings are young plants that will need to be grown to flowering size.  Unless otherwise stated in the description, items listed are not sent in spike, bud or bloom.

Brassavola digbyana ‘Belize ‘#1’ x self

    SKU:9280/30

Brassavola digbyana ‘Belize ‘#1’ x self

This famous and extremely fragrant species is native to warm regions ranging from Mexico down through Central America. Large, deeply fringed blooms have a waxy substance and intense green coloring.

A warm growing species native to regions of Mexico and regions further south.  As plants mature plenty of very bright direct is needed, though too much will cause red and desiccated foliage tips.  Grow in fast draining media that does not need to be replaced often as the needed frequent waterings cause media to decompose rapidly.  An excellent candidate for mount or basket culture under the right conditions.

Great looking plants in at least 3" pots, most with strong new growth.

  7. Cattleya bicolor 4N

    Cattleya bicolor 4N

    SKU:9878-9879/30

A tall, slender growing Brazilian species that loves bright light and warm temperatures. Clusters of waxy green blooms with bright fuchsia lips appear above bifoliate foliage. These seedlings are bred from our tetraploid 'Mendenhall-Beta' parent and are expected to have heavy substance and clear, bright coloring.

We are offering seedlings growing in 3" mesh baskets and chunky tree fern media.  We have found that this species does not take well to over watering, especially during the winter months.  Our suggestion for these seedlings is to mist heavily 3 to 4 times per week during the winter, and daily during the warmer summer months. First flowers are expected within twelve months.

    SKU:10278/25

Cattleya lueddemanniana 'Springtime' x Cattleya lueddemanniana 'Mendenhall'

This grex was made using the darkest forms of this spring blooming species that we have in our collection.  Growth habit is very short and almost sprawling which makes it perfect for basket or mount culture.  Faint purple freckles are evident on the low growing leaves.

Growing Suggestion- This species needs very bright, indirect light (not for windowsill growers) and should be repotted only on new growths, when necessary.

Very Limited availability in 2.5" pots
