Cattleyas, the royalty of the orchid family, are native to the slopes of the Andes in South America. On the mountain slopes they have moderate days and cool nights, so they appreciate a temperature drop in the evening. They are comfortable at temperatures as low as 55 degrees at night, with days in the 70's or higher. They need bright light (not full sun) to flower. They must have good drainage, and like to dry a bit between waterings. Fertilize lightly when they are in active growth. Repot in a well draining mix, like our Cypress blends, when they have outgrown the pot or the mix has broken down (every two or three years).

Please refer to individual items for time expected until first blooming. Many of our offerings are young plants that will need to be grown to flowering size.  Unless otherwise stated in the description, items listed are not sent in spike, bud or bloom.

  2. Blc. Newberry Prom Night 'Pretty in Pink

    Shall We Dance- Cattleya Collection

Read about the parent that inspired these new crosses.

Blc. Newberry Prom Night ‘Pretty in Pink’ (Blc. Chancemaker x Lc. Twilight Song)

The slender upright foliage is a perfect showcase for the arching stems of flowers.  Very round, soft pink blooms with great substance.  The lip is pale cream with hints of yellow, which are echoed in the faint petal flaring.  We have seen multiple bloomings per year which is a trait we hope to bring out in the seedlings.  This parent is a stunner on its own but has also filled us with new ideas for crosses using a variety of other parents.  We have noticed that when using this in breeding the other parent becomes dominant in growth habit.  Our very first crosses made using Blc. Newberry Prom Night ‘Pretty in Pink’ are finally available.

Shall We Dance Cattleya Collection will include one each of the following brand-new crosses

10201 Lc. Newberry Bee Bop Pink

(Lc. Kiritsubo 'Southern Stars' x Lc. Newberry Prom Night 'Pretty in Pink')

The pod parent is an adorable miniature that has already proven itself a breeder of very floriferous compact plants.  These will be extremely short growers, with clusters of soft pink or even cream blooms.  Both parents can bloom multiple times per year.  Will also be suitable for basket or mount culture.  Sent as Near Blooming Size plants in 2.5” pots.

    10203 Lctna. Newberry Salsa Splash

(Ctna. Capri 'Lea' AM/AOS x Lc. Newberry Prom Night 'Pretty in Pink')

The second parent is a bold hot pink splash petal with Broughtonia influence.  We have already flowered our first seedling (shown below) and the kaleidoscope of colors is quite interesting.  These seem to prefer basket culture for better drainage.  Mainly fall bloomers but possibly free flowering in warm climates.  Sent as Blooming Size plants in 3” baskets.

10288 Lc. Newberry Pearl Tango                     registration pending

(Lc. Newberry Prom Night 'Pretty in Pink' x Laelia lobata concolor 'Jeni' AM/AOS)

Ooh La La!  This will be one fancy looking cross.  Sprays of shimmering pink, elegant cream and even pristine alba blooms on standard sized plants.  Great for late spring or possibly early summer.  Sent as recently potted seedlings in 2.5” pots.

10292 Slc. Newberry Pink Samba                    registration pending

(Lc. Newberry Prom Night 'Pretty in Pink' x Slc. Sierra Splash 'June')

The second parent is a jazzy looking number with bold purple splashes across the petals.  These are already sturdy seedlings and we expect them to stay compact with mainly bifoliate growth habit.  Clusters of showy blooms in summer.   Sent as recently repotted seedlings in 2.5” pots.

This collection does not qualify for further discounts, promo codes, or AOS coupons.  Regular packing and shipping will be added to the price.
