Carter and Holmes Orchids works to provide a variety of different orchids for sale including rare species, classic mericlones, new and unique hybrids grown from seed and more. Our goal is to offer healthy, vigorous plants that will thrive in different growing conditions, though we consider our 'niche' to be orchids that are suitable for the beginner or hobby grower. Our selections for sale will vary throughout the year.

  1. Maxillaria variabilis (gold)

    Maxillaria Ben Berliner

    Maxillaria Ben Berliner

(Maxillaria variabilis (gold) x tenuifolia aurea)

Our remake was made using the less common yellow forms of both species. We expect to see miniature yellow blooms, some with dark eyes and some with reddish freckles. The second parent is very fragrant so that may come through as well. These will prefer cool to intermediate temperatures and damp feet.  As they grow plants will become gorgeous specimens, suitable for baskets and hanging containers.  Flowers will appear mostly in the early to mid spring but plants can freely show blooms throughout the year.

Growing Suggestions: We are currently growing these seedlings in containers with a light sphagnum moss blend.  This allows constant humidity around the roots without leading to rotten or soggy conditions.  Medium to bright light is best but plants must be kept in moderate temperatures to avoid leaf burn.  Good airflow is a must for healthy foliage.

We are offering Blooming Size Plants growing in 5" plastic pots. These will not need to be repotted or disturbed for at least 12-18 months.

  2. Phal. Creme de Menthe 'Newberry'.

    Phal. Creme de Menthe 'Newberry'

Our exclusive mericlone has frosty white blooms tipped with mint green accents and barely there pink blush in the center of each flower.  Beautiful and long lasting, this is a perfect addition to any collection. This was handpicked from one of Lenette Greenhouses last crosses.

Plants being offered are in 5" pots, and in early spike stage.  Plants are expected to bloom later this coming winter.

    Blc. Starstruck

(Marsha T. Tsuruda x Volcano Glory ‘Enormous’)

Another amazing cross from hybridizer Matthias Seelis.  Though newer than some on the orchid scene, he has already received the 2016 MERRITT HUNTINGTON AWARD and continues to produce new and unusual hybrids.  We have been very pleased to discover a source for his amazing work, and are able to share with our customers (plus we have added a few goodies to our own collection.)

This new cross uses Volcano Glory which is a stunning semi-alba showing bold purple petal flaring.  The markings ALWAYS pass through somehow to the next generation yielding some very unique results.  Blc. Starstruck will be gorgeous dark and rosy lavenders with bright petal splashes and matching lip coloring.  Wonderfully fragrant.

We are offering a limited quantity of 5" pots, most of which are flowering size and expected to bloom within 12 months.

These beautiful plants were provided by our friends at a wholesale orchid nursery in Hawaii. The parents were virus free at the time of hybridizing but because we did not raise them in our greenhouses, we can not guarantee them to be virus free as we would our own lab grown material. Otherwise, we guarantee your satisfaction and safe delivery as with other plant purchases.
