  1. Dendrobium finisterrae *Unusual Species*

    Dendrobium finisterrae *Unusual Species*

    SKU:10566/25

    Dendrobium finisterrae

Where do you go to find such an unusual looking orchid?  Why to the ends of the earth of course!  This prickly looking species is native to the Finisterre Mountain range in Papua, New Guinea.  The Latin root for the name of these mountains literally means End of the Earth.  Thankfully we don't have to travel that far anymore to add one to our collections.  Lush dark, green foliage rests on tapered pseudobulbs.  Bloom stems appear from the top of the growth in late spring and emerge to hold several green and white blooms.  The backs of the flowers are covered in prickly hairs, while the cupped lip shows dark maroon-red veins and spots.   Plants may lose some leaves during seasonal changes but should not lose all foliage unless plant is under extreme stress.  Even then, if leaves drop simply water carefully until new growth appears.

Growing Suggestions:  We suggest this as an intermediate grower.  In nature plants are found at high elevations where light is bright but temperatures are mostly cool year round.  Leaves can burn under high temperature or too bright light.  Maintain at least some water and humidity year round (no dry spell) but more is needed during the warm growing months.

We have a limited quantity of these plants happily growing in 2.5" pots.  Plants are expected to be flowering size in approximately two years.

These beautiful plants were provided by our friends at a wholesale orchid nursery in Hawaii. Because we did not raise them in our greenhouses, we can not guarantee them to be virus free as we would our own lab grown material. Otherwise, we guarantee your satisfaction and safe delivery as with other plant purchases.

    Lc. Newberry Bee Bop Pink

(Lc. Kiritsubo 'Southern Stars' x Lc. Newberry Prom Night 'Pretty in Pink')

The pod parent is an adorable miniature that has already proven itself a breeder of very floriferous compact plants.  These will be extremely short growers, with clusters of soft pink or even cream blooms.  Both parents can bloom multiple times per year.  Will also be suitable for basket or mount culture.

  3. Maxillaria variabilis (gold)

    Maxillaria Ben Berliner *New Size*

    SKU:10166/60

    Maxillaria Ben Berliner

(Maxillaria variabilis (gold) x tenuifolia aurea)

Our remake was made using the less common yellow forms of both species. We expect to see miniature yellow blooms, some with dark eyes and some with reddish freckles. The second parent is very fragrant so that may come through as well. These will prefer cool to intermediate temperatures and damp feet.  As they grow plants will become gorgeous specimens, suitable for baskets and hanging containers.  Flowers will appear mostly in the early to mid spring but plants can freely show blooms throughout the year.

Growing Suggestions: We are currently growing these seedlings in containers with a light sphagnum moss blend.  This allows constant humidity around the roots without leading to rotten or soggy conditions.  Medium to bright light is best but plants must be kept in moderate temperatures to avoid leaf burn.  Good airflow is a must for healthy foliage.

We are offering Blooming Size Plants growing in 6" plastic pots. These will not need to be repotted or disturbed for at least 12-18 months.

  5. Paph. appletonianum *Species*

    Paph. appletonianum *Species*

    SKU:PaphApple/40

    Paphiopedilum appletonianum

    ('Fox Valley' AM/AOS x self)

This wonderful species is everything elegant and dainty in a ladyslipper.  Low growing, compact foliage is pale green and silver with darker flecks.  Tall stems hold pink and green blooms that seem to float in mid-air.  The awarded parent is a high-color form and we expect these to be the same.  As plants mature they will produce clumps of multiple growths that can easily be grown as specimens. (We do not recommend dividing plants unless you have experience doing so).

Growing Suggestions:   Easy to maintain and bring into the flower. These are great for most windowsill collections, alongside other Phalaenopsis and Ladyslippers. Moderate light and intermediate temperatures.  Like other ladyslippers, roots should not be allowed to dry out.  We encourage checking for water approximately twice per week.  Plants are well established and do not need repotting until at least next spring.

We have plants well grown in 4" pots and large enough to bloom in season, late this coming winter.

  6. Peristeria elata *Dove Orchid*

    Peristeria elata *Dove Orchid*

    SKU:9601/35

    Peristeria elata

This rare and beautiful species is native to Panama and surrounding countries.  Plants are usually seen growing at or very close to the ground in layers of rich humus and decaying plant material.  Known by many nicknames 'Dove Orchid', 'Holy Ghost Orchid', 'Holy Trinity orchid' due to the fact that if you look inside the blooms you will see the shape of a small white dove. Waxy, fragrant white blooms are held on tall, upright stems.  Inflorescences can be upward of 3 feet tall and hold over a dozen blooms.  Flowers appear in late summer and early fall although spikes can take months to reach maturity.

Growing Suggestions: We do not suggest this offering for beginner growers, or for those growing inside on windowsills.  Peristeria elata should be grown in warm to hot conditions with a minimum year round temperature around 65-70 degrees. As young seedlings, light should be low to medium and as plants mature brighter light should be available.  Foliage can burn easily in extreme tempertures or bright light so constant moving air is recommended. Water and feed well during the active growing months. As growths mature reduce fertilizer/water but do not allow roots to become dry for long periods.  As with many terrestrials, roots are fuzzy and must have some moisture at all times. This plant can and will defoliate older growths.  Many times the only foliage on plants is the current years leaves.

We are offering seedlings approximately 2+ years from Blooming Size, already established in 3.5" pots.  These are very Limited and expected to sell out quickly.

  7. Pot. Paxton Brooks 'Orange Surprise'

Potianara Paxton Brooks ‘Orange Surprise’ x Potinara Paxton Brooks ‘Sunset Glow’

    SKU:10046/25

We flowered so many wonderful cultivars from the original grex, we had a hard time choosing our two favorites to create this sibling cross.  These seedlings are expected to be mostly compact growers, though a few larger growing plants are expected.  Flowers will be in a range of sunset tones from orange and peach to rose and some coral shades.  Warmth tolerant but the best flower coloring can appear in cooler temperatures.  Some of these will flower multiple times per year.

We have a nice crop of plants established in 2.5" pots.

  8. Slc. Jeanne Wilson ‘MVO’ AM/AOS *Limited Edition*

Slc. Jeanne Wilson ‘MVO’ AM/AOS *Limited Edition*

    SKU:10209M/30

    Slc. Jeanne Wilson ‘MVO’ AM/AOS

(Slc. Kauai Starbright x Sophronitis cernua)

New Limited Edition Mericlone!  This is a compact grower with sprays of bright orange and yellow blooms.  Foliage is expected to reach no more than 10" tall when mature, with rigid pairs of rounded leaves. Very nice late winter bloomer!  Will start flowering when young and get more impressive with age.

Due to the species parentage we recommend this for cool to intermediate growing conditions.  (Not suitable for outdoors in warm climates, ask us how we know...)  Medium to bright light is best.  We are growing these in mesh baskets with large grade fir bark since good drainage is a must.

We have a small crop of plants growing in 3" mesh baskets.  These are near blooming size and expected to produce first blooms within 12-24  months.
