Flasks

Carter and Holmes Orchids is first and foremost a Cattleya Orchid nursery so the majority of our offerings will be in that alliance.  Cattleyas, Laelias, Miniature and Compact Breeding and much more.

Our flasks are glass with rubber stoppers and can have different numbers of plants depending on the genus and stage.  Please read each description carefully for more information. Availability is very limited and usually only offered for a short time. Be prepared to work on your flask as soon as it arrives since shipping can loosen media and dislodge plants.

There will not always be items in this category as material moves quickly through our lab.

FINALS- Our term for flasks in the final lab stages.  In most cases plants are ready to be moved into compots immediately. This represents the majority of our offerings.

SPREADS- Our Term for flasks at an intermediate stage.  This means they are small but well formed plants that need to be moved on 'Finals' and allowed to get larger before moving to the greenhouse.  Great for small labs or classroom/university projects.

MOTHER FLASKS- This is the first step after planting orchid seed.  Mother flasks hold literally hundreds if not a thousand baby orchids.  These must be kept in a lab setting and moved onto other media.  Not offered often since there are so many in a bottle.

A Reminder: Orchids in this category are NOT in pots, or anywhere near flowering size.  These are for commercial or hobby growers that have the time and patience to start babies from this earliest phase.

Blc. Miami Gold 'Mendenhall' x Pot. Susan Fender 'Newberry' *Flask*

    SKU:10361/Flask

A new Cattleya hybrid created by Gene Crocker.  Both parents are large, beautiful growers with sturdy foliage.  Miami Gold is a proven parent with strong stems of concolor peach-yellow blooms in late winter. Very long lasting, usually for several weeks.  Susan Fender is one of our best late summer art-shades with incredibly vibrant coloring and as many as four standard blooms per stem.  We feel blooming season on these seedlings will vary, but what won't be in question is that they will be big and gorgeous when they flower! Some fragrance is expected.

  3. Laelia anceps alba 'Newberry Ice'

Laelia anceps alba 'White Christmas' 4N x 'Newberry Ice' 4N *Flask*

    SKU:10295/Flask

Laelia anceps is a hardy growing species that hails from regions of Mexico up through southern California.  While young plants will need to be kept in temperature controlled growing conditions, mature plants will grow in a wide range of conditions.  Very, bright indirect light or even dappled shade will be needed for the best blooms and sturdy foliage.

This new and limited grex is bred using two tetraploid white forms.  Both are polyploid mutations of the famous 'Marble Queen' variety, but instead have pure white blooms with just a hint of icy green in the throat. Large growing, with long arching stems.  As they grow, these can be adapted to mount or basket culture very easily.  We expect award quality from this rare selection!

We are offering final stage flasks with at least 12-15 plants in each ready to be planted out into compots.

  4. Blc. Hwa Yuan Moon

Pot. Hattie Sims 'Golden Globe' x Blc. Hwa Yuan Moon 'Mendenhall' *FLASK*

    SKU:10362/FLASK

What an interesting cross for future yellow blooms with striking red lips. Hwa Yuan Moon is a compact hybrid bred from Laelia briegeri, which will help reduce the overall size of the seedlings and increase bud count.  Hattie Sims is one of our best yellow Cattleya crosses in decades and produces award quality yellow, gold and artshade blooms on standard sized plants.  Possibly fragrant?  We expect these seedlings to grow quickly and reach flowering size in 4" pots, or younger.

We are offering final stage flasks with at least 12-15 plants in each ready to be planted out into compots.
